To whom it may concern: My name is John Converse, the band director at La Cueva High School. I am writing this letter to express my concern with the grass fields at our school. Our fields are used throughout the school year by the marching band, football team, soccer team and numerous community athletic organizations. I feel that the condition of the fields have become inadequate for use and are unsafe for our students. For our band, we are unable to teach proper marching style to the students due to the wear and tear the field has been subjected to through years of hard use. In addition to hindering the educational process, the fields have been the cause of numerous sprained ankles, twisted knees and neck/back strains in recent years. I am certain this is also the case for the athletic teams as well. Our fields are in use from 6am to 8pm and have developed depressions, holes, and other types of damage as a result of daily use. The damage is hard for the students to see, especially at 6:30 in the morning. In addition to the previously mentioned injuries brass players can have teeth knocked out from their mouthpiece if they step into a hole. The falls that can occur can also inflict a great deal of damage to the instruments and other equipment. Some equipment cannot be repaired in the case of a hard fall. Some of our marching instruments can cost up to $3,000. Most families would not find it financially feasible to be able to replace a personal instrument damaged in a fall. It would also be difficult for the school to replace the instruments owned by APS. It is my understanding that there is a proposal on the table that would allow us to replace the grass on the soccer field with artificial turf. We are asking you to support Senator Curtis’s capital outlay request for the LCHS community turf field. Please send emails to the website www.nmlegis.gov, all the committee member’s emails are listed. Please copy lisa.curtis@nmlegis.gov as well. You may also mail hard copy letters to Sen Lisa Curtis, NM State Capitol, Room 218, Santa Fe, NM 87501. We need as much support from the La Cueva community as we can possibly get. Thank you for your time and effort on this project. I am asking you to support Senator Curtis’s capital outlay request for the LCHS community turf field. Please send email or call the Legislative Finance Committee members – especially Senators: John Arthur Smith (john.smith@nmlegis.gov / (505) 986-4365 or Fax at (505) 986-4280 Sincerely, John D.
